Exhibit: Hava Hegenbarth: Capturing the Natural World - Charles H. MacNider Art Museum(Center Space Gallery), 303 2nd St. SE (641-421-3666). The Charles H. MacNider Art Museum is pleased to highlight the whimsical images created by Mason City artist, Hava Hegenbarth.  Hava Hagenbarth: Capturing The Natural World, includes 29 prints and drawings.  Hagenbarth’s artwork, featuring an assortment of animals and natural landscapes, will transport the viewer to the continent of Africa without leaving North Iowa. Hegenbarth is retired from the U.S. Foreign Service where she served primarily in Africa.  She always had a love and talent for art but pursued other interests in her career.  She now has the free time to create the art she loves and share it with Museum visitors.  Exhibit will be on display until September 23, 2017 - open during normal museum hours. https://macniderart.org/

Exhibit: Vibrant Bounty:  Chinese Folk Art from the Shaanxi Region- Charles H. MacNider Art Museum(Kinney-Lindstrom Gallery), 303 2nd St. SE (641-421-3666). As brilliant as the petals of a lotus and as bold as a spring storm, these folk paintings and artifacts of rural China reveal a national spirit that is as charming as it is vital. By depicting scenes of labor within lavish pastoral settings, the paintings celebrate the farmers’ unity amidst the immensity of nature. The artifacts in Vibrant Bounty reveal a humanity that aids us in understanding a people half a world away. Vibrant Bounty: Chinese Folk Art from the Shaanxi Region is a program of  ExhibitsUSA, a national division of Mid-America Arts Alliances and The National Endowment for the Arts. Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band & Beth Hart
Guitarist and songsmith Kenny Wayne Shepherd blends modern blues and rock and is credited with awakening a renewed interest in the blues genre. Shepherd and his band have sold millions of albums and released top-10 hits, including “Slow Ride,” “In 2 Deep” and the No. 1 hit “Blue on Black.”
He performs live at Hoyt Sherman Place with Grammy- nominated singersongwriter Beth Hart. A digital download of Kenny Wayne Shepherd’s new album “Lay It On Down” is included with every ticket.

14th Annual Oktoberfest Des Moines
Everyone is German, at least for the day, at Oktoberfest. Des Moines’ annual celebration, held in the Historic Court Avenue District, promises to be bigger than ever, with fun scheduled at the Hofbrau Rooftop Bier Garden, Craft Beer Village and Lederhosen Lounge. Kick it off with the Tapping of the Golden Keg at 3 p.m.
Friday and stick around for the Bier Maiden Contest at 9. Throughout the weekend, enjoy live entertainment, free polka lessons, stein holding competitions, German food and more. Tickets are $10 at the door and include a commemorative mug.

Masterworks 1: Season Debut — Invitation to the Dance The Des Moines Symphony, under the direction of Joseph Giunta, opens its 80th season, “Music in Motion,” with Weber’s Invitation to the Dance, followed by a performance of Bruch’s beloved Violin Concerto No. 1 in G Minor, featuring two-time Grammy nominee Jennifer Frautschi. Broken Social Scene
The Indie rock collective hailing from Toronto Broken Social Scene makes a stop at Hoyt Sherman Place on tour with their newest album Hug of Thunder. The group is partnering with Plus 1, so $1 from every ticket will go toward providing access to arts education for young people in disadvantaged communities.

Emmylou Harris
Country legend Emmylou Harris has won 13 Grammy Awards, a Billboard Century Award and has been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. In her 40-plus years as a singer, she has collaborated with many different artists, including Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton.

Fall Antique Jamboree

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels & The Pork Tornadoes Des Moines band Dirty Rotten Scoundrels revives the oldies, settling in the years between 1950-69.
