Featured Artist Of The Month: Robert Pratt

For 40-some years, Algona native Robert Pratt (AKA The Digital Chicken) has enjoyed, some might say, a "checkered" career in the arts--professional actor, corporate creative director, fiction writer, and throughout it all, a painter of chickens.
In his early twenties, after nine semesters of college, he hitch-hiked from Iowa to make a name for himself in Hollywood. Living in a rented garage for six months, he got his first break as a journeyman actor at the prestigious Mark Taper Forum Theatre in Los Angeles, followed by a year of studying with world famous acting coach Peggy Feury, then the 1970 Peter Fonda film, "The Hired Hand." (far right)
That auspicious debut led to a contract with Universal Studios, and more than 28 film and television productions, including co-starring with Academy Award winner Sally Field in the TV movie "Marriage: Year One."
In the late 70's, Bob formed a production company, Prattooth Productions, with his longtime friend Randolph Mantooth, star of the hit television show "Emergency," on which Bob had guest roles.
That led to another career, as a creative director, first in Minneapolis, then Milwaukee, then to St. Louis for Busch Creative, a division of Anheuser-Busch, and a People Magazine cover.
All the while, he was writing novels, including "Kachina Dreams," and pursuing his hobby of painting chickens crossing interesting roads, and living interesting lives, inspired by nearby people and events. This one seems pretty appropriate to us today:
Bob's chicken calendars sell out regularly, as do his prints, which are available on his website, www.thedigitalchicken.com. This is our current favorite work, but you'll want to be sure to watch the video on the landing page:
Algona's Bob Pratt now lives contentedly in a customized vintage Airstream, traveling wherever and whenever he pleases, painting and writing along the way, including a novel called "Aluminum Fever." A real free-range chicken. We think Bob has the Life thing down pat. We envy him.

Bruce's Column: November!

My column for Nowonder on a very nice day.
It's the month we set aside a day to be thankful. A day doesn't seem long enough, it should be a week, or all month or we could just be thankful every day...
Of all the things in life over which we have no control where and when we are born is the big one. If you've seen the movie Men In Black 3 you know my favorite character, the little guy who could see the outcome of various realities.
This makes sense to me. A small thing can have monumental consequences, so you're being thankful for the choice you made.or wishing things had turned out differently.
To steal from the Lennon/Cartney songbook from In My Life "there are places I remember some have gone and some remain" the places I have been and the people who were meant to come into my life, "some are dead and some are living, in my life I've loved them all".
The sad thing about aging is that the ones you love do too...but I have made so many friends that have entered my life to be grateful for it makes me happy to think about the times we shared.
I am thankful for the life I am living after all the years, going on 39 in North Iowa, my family and friends and the association with the people I have worked along side and for, and being able in a way to keep in contact with a number of you.
I will do my best to be thankful for what I have every day.
Have a good month, check with you in Distemper...61 days to 2017.
