My Column, by Bruce Wasenius

My column for September goes like this.
A little bit about anxiety. It can drive you crazy, literally. Even after 40 plus years on the radio I still get anxious, not because I'm not prepared but the idea that something technical may cause problems out of my control is in my mind right up to the point when I turn on the mic and speak.
Some of you know that I have had heart surgery a couple of times. Was I worried about it? No my anxiety was about whether I should get a haircut and if my friends would recognize me. About a year ago I had an appointment with my cardiologist who as I was leaving said I should see him if I had frequent heartburn and shortness of breath. A few months later I started to experience nightly heartburn and short of breath and made an appointment to see him. Until that time I was convinced I had anything that caused trouble breathing or any heartburn was a sign the time was up. I pictured myself face down in the dishwater or the cat litter box, scoop in hand.
I anxiously looked forward to seeing what advice he would have. I told him of my symptoms and how worried I had become and he assuaged my fears and that I should cut down on spicy foods and exercise more and that I was fine.
I was thrilled that my fears had been for naught and I am looking forward to my next visit.
Anxiety can be conquered with knowledge. If you are worried about something and it's in your control learn what you can so you have a realistic view of what you can do to overcome it.
Soapbox over. September already...seems as though just yesterday it was August. Headlights on in the evening already leaves are turning. Lots to do inside and out. Enjoy the changes in the seasons. Have a safe and happy Labor Day and remember those who we honor that day.
